@Michelle Castile is passionate about addressing social connection in Wisconsin and serves on the Policy Champions Committee with the Wisconsin Coalition for Social Connection.

Tell us about the work that your organization does. What is your mission and what population(s) do you serve?

The Wisconsin Coalition for Social Connection Network works to promote social connectedness and address issues related to social isolation. As a Policy Champions Committee Member, my focus involves advocating for policies that enhance social support systems, aiming to reduce isolation and its related health impacts. The organization's mission centers on improving the well-being of individuals through stronger community ties and more inclusive, supportive social environments. The coalition primarily serves individuals and communities across Wisconsin who are vulnerable to social isolation, such as older adults, those with disabilities, and other marginalized groups.

Please tell us about the goals of the program you are involved with and how you support social connection?
I am heavily involved in a variety of programs and initiatives related to social engagement. My advocacy work spans several crucial areas such as educational rights, substance abuse prevention, mental health, social connectedness, and policy reform.

Specifically, I am:

  • A Champions Committee Member for the Wisconsin Coalition for Social Connection Network, focused on combating social isolation.

  • An active member of the Wisconsin Statewide Parent Educator Initiative (WSPEI), advocating for the educational needs of my children and others.

  • Involved in a grassroots recovery coalition, focusing on substance abuse prevention and harm reduction.

  • A member of the Advocacy Committee at National Alliance on Mental Illness, contributing to mental health initiatives.

  • An advisor for the Superior Health Quality Alliance, working to address health disparities.

  • A participant in the Partners for Policymaking Program, gaining skills and knowledge to advocate for policy change.

The goals of these programs and my involvement in them are varied, but they all contribute to social engagement. Some common goals include:

  • Empowering individuals and families to advocate for their needs and rights.

  • Improving access to essential services and resources.

  • Reducing stigma and discrimination related to various social issues.

  • Creating systemic change through policy reform.

  • Fostering connection and community among individuals with shared experiences.

I strive to create changes with these causes and my active participation. I am committed to social engagement and making a positive impact in my community and beyond.

Share one of your top achievements or a success story.

My achievements are finding my life's work in advocacy and the transformation I've undergone from a frustrated homeowner grappling with the devastating consequences of a failed government program, to a passionate advocate fighting for systemic change. Despite facing numerous setbacks, dismissals, and outright indifference from those in power, I refused to give up. I educated myself, connected with like-minded individuals, and found my voice.

Through my relentless advocacy, I've not only shed light on the injustices I faced but also become a catalyst for change in various areas, including educational rights, substance abuse prevention, mental health, and social connectedness. I've secured victories for my children's education, helped provide harm reduction resources to my community, and contributed to policy discussions at the local and state levels.

This journey has been very long and incredibly exhausting, but it has also been incredibly empowering. I've discovered my passion for advocacy, developed invaluable skills, and built meaningful connections with others who share my commitment to creating a better world. My story serves as a testament to the transformative power of personal experience and the unwavering pursuit of justice, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Why is promoting social connectedness important to the community/population you serve? Why and when did you start incorporating social connectedness into your programming?

Promoting social connectedness is crucial to the communities and populations I serve because it directly addresses a fundamental human need for belonging and support. Social isolation and disconnection can have devastating consequences, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and even premature death. By fostering social connections, I aim to create a sense of community and empowerment, enabling individuals to thrive and overcome challenges.

I began incorporating social connectedness into my advocacy work when I personally experienced the profound impact of isolation and the transformative power of connection. As I navigated the complexities of advocating for my children's educational needs and my own health concerns, I found solace and strength in connecting with others who shared similar experiences. The support and understanding I received from these connections were instrumental in my journey towards healing and empowerment.

Recognizing the vital role social connectedness plays in individual and community well-being, I have made it a central focus of my advocacy efforts. Whether through supporting parent groups, participating in recovery coalitions, or contributing to mental health initiatives, I strive to create opportunities for individuals to connect, share their stories, and build supportive relationships.

By promoting social connectedness, I believe I can contribute to building stronger, healthier, and more resilient communities where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered. Everyone deserves to be heard, and I know firsthand the feelings of no one listening when it feels as if you are screaming. These experiences are my driving force to create change where it's needed.

Any exciting projects coming up?
Yes, there are several exciting projects and opportunities on the horizon. I'm eagerly anticipating the upcoming legislative session, where I plan to continue advocating for policy reforms that address the systemic issues I've encountered. I'm also excited about the potential to collaborate with other advocates and organizations to create a broader impact.

Additionally, I'm continuing my education in social work, which I hope will equip me with even more tools and knowledge to effectively serve my community. I'm always open to new opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with others who share my passion for advocacy and social change.

Overall, I'm optimistic about the future and excited to see what new challenges and opportunities arise. I'm committed to using my voice and experiences to make a positive difference in the lives of others and create a more just and equitable society for all. This is what I was born to do.

Do you have tips for others looking to increase social connection and engagement programming or a key resource you can share?

Yes, I do have some tips for others looking to increase social connection and engagement in their programming:

  • Prioritize authentic connection: Focus on creating opportunities for genuine interactions and meaningful relationships. Encourage active listening, empathy, and mutual support.

  • Tailor programming to individual needs and interests: Offer a variety of activities and events that cater to diverse interests and skill levels.

  • Utilize technology: Leverage online platforms and social media to connect people, facilitate communication, and expand reach.

  • Foster a sense of ownership and empowerment: Encourage participants to take an active role in shaping programming and provide opportunities for leadership and decision-making.

  • Celebrate successes and milestones: Recognize and acknowledge individual and collective achievements to boost morale and motivation.

  • Continuously evaluate and improve: Gather feedback from participants and stakeholders to identify areas for improvement and adapt programming accordingly.

A key resource I would recommend is the Partners for Policymaking Program offered by the Board for People with Developmental Disabilities (BPDD) and Family Voices. These organizations provide invaluable training and support for individuals with or without disabilities and their families to become effective advocates for policy change. It empowers participants to develop leadership skills, build relationships with policymakers, and influence decisions that impact their lives and communities.
